Introduction

Verifi AI ("we," "our," or "the extension") is a Chrome browser extension that helps users understand and verify AI-generated responses from ChatGPT. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our extension.

Information We Collect

1. Personal Communications

When you use the extension to analyze a ChatGPT conversation, we collect:

• User prompts you've entered in ChatGPT conversations
• AI responses generated by ChatGPT

This data is collected only when you explicitly click the "Analyze" button in the extension pop-up. We do not automatically collect or monitor your conversations.

2. Website Content

We extract text content from ChatGPT pages (chat.openai.com and chatgpt.com) to perform analysis. This includes:

• The text content of AI responses
• The text content of your prompts

3. Authentication Information

We store your Google Gemini API key locally in your browser using Chrome's sync storage. This API key is:

• Stored securely in your browser's encrypted storage
• Only used to authenticate requests to Google's Gemini API on your behalf
• You can delete it at any time through the extension settings

4. Temporary Analysis Data

We temporarily store analysis results (explanations, fact-check results, relevance scores) in your browser's local storage. This data is:

• Stored only on your device
• Automatically cleared when you reinstall the extension
• Used only to display results in the extension popup

How We Use Your Information

We use the collected information solely for the following purposes:

1. To provide core functionality: Analyzing ChatGPT conversations to generate explanations, keyword definitions, and fact-checking results
2. To display results: Showing analysis results in the extension popup interface
3. To enhance the page: Highlighting keywords and annotating facts directly on the ChatGPT page

We do NOT:

• Sell or rent your data to third parties
• Use your data for advertising or marketing purposes
• Use your data for purposes unrelated to the extension's functionality
• Use your data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes
• Share your data with third parties except as necessary for the extension to function (see "Third-Party Services" below)

Data Storage and Security

Local Storage

• Your Gemini API key is stored in Chrome's sync storage, which is encrypted and synced across your Chrome browsers (if sync is enabled)
• Temporary analysis results are stored in Chrome's local storage on your device only
• We do not store your data on any server. A minimal Vercel proxy is used only to route fact-check requests to Wikipedia.

Data Retention

• Your API key is retained until you delete it through the extension settings
• Temporary analysis results are cleared when you reinstall the extension
• We do not maintain any persistent records of your conversations or analysis data

Third-Party Services

To provide our services, the extension communicates with the following third-party services:

1. Google Gemini API

• Purpose: To analyze conversation content and generate explanations, keyword definitions, and fact-checking analysis
• Data Sent: User prompts and AI responses from ChatGPT conversations
• Privacy: Your data is subject to Google's Privacy Policy
• Note: Your API key is sent directly to Google's API - we do not intercept or store it on our servers

2. Wikipedia API

• Purpose: To fact-check claims made in AI responses
• Data Sent: Specific factual claims extracted from AI responses
• Privacy: Wikipedia API requests are public and subject to Wikipedia's Privacy Policy

3. Vercel Proxy Server

• Purpose: This is the server used for the factual verification of AI-generated answers, generating a scorecard for the facts, highlighting keywords and generating their meanings, and generating the summary of the response.
• Data Sent: Same as Google Gemini API requests
• Privacy: Subject to Vercel's privacy practices

Important: We do not control these third-party services. We encourage you to review their privacy policies to understand how they handle your data.

Permissions Explained

The extension requires the following permissions:

• Storage: To store your API key and temporary analysis results
• activeTab: To access the active ChatGPT tab only when you click the "Analyze" button
• Host Permissions:
  • chat.openai.com and chatgpt.com: To inject content scripts that extract conversation data
  • generativelanguage.googleapis.com: To communicate with Google's Gemini API
  • en.wikipedia.org: To query Wikipedia's API for fact-checking
  • ai-explainer-api.vercel.app: For talking to the backend server where all the processing happens

Your Rights and Choices

You have the following rights regarding your data:

1. Access: You can view your stored API key in the extension settings
2. Deletion: You can delete your API key at any time through the extension settings
3. Control: You control when analysis occurs - data is only collected when you click "Analyze"
4. Uninstall: You can uninstall the extension at any time, which will remove all locally stored data

Children's Privacy

Our extension is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with their personal information, please contact us.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by:

• Updating the "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy
• Posting the new Privacy Policy in the Chrome Web Store listing
